The difference between an affirmation and an intention

An affirmation is a positive statement that affirms something to be true. Affirmations are often used in self-help and spiritual practices to help manifest the desired outcome. An intention is a desired outcome or goal that you are striving to achieve. Intention is usually more focused on the action you will take to manifest the desired outcome, whereas affirmations focus on the outcome itself.

What is an affirmation?

An affirmation is a positive statement that can help you to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts. Affirmations can help you to focus on the positive aspects of yourself, and can be used to help you reach goals, feel more confident, and build self-esteem. They can be used to remind yourself of your strengths, and to encourage yourself to stay motivated and on track.

Examples of affirmations

Here are some affirmations to help you get started:

  • I am capable of achieving my goals.
  • I am worthy of love and abundance.
  • I am open to new opportunities and experiences with enthusiasm.
  • I am courageous and confident in my abilities.
  • I believe in myself and my potential.
  • I am strong, resilient and determined.
  • I am surrounded by positive, loving people.
  • I am at peace and content with who I am.
  • I am grateful for the unique gifts and talents I have.
  • I choose to be happy and fulfilled.

Important tip: When creating an affirmation, write it and say it in the present tense. E.g. “I am” instead of “I will be”. You are putting your energy out there to say that you are it, as if it’s already happening and as if it’s already your reality. This puts you in alignment with what you want to attract.

When you affirm ‘I am’, over time you start to believe it because you say it so much and therefore you become what you believe and your actions reflect what you believe in.

What is an intention?

An intention is a desire or aim that guides your behaviour. An intention is a plan that you set for yourself with the aim of achieving a particular goal. It is a conscious decision to act in a certain way and is usually accompanied by a feeling of determination or commitment. Intention can be used to create positive outcomes in your life, as it helps to focus your energy and resources in a specific direction.

Examples of an intention

  • Spending more quality time with family
  • Setting aside time for self-care each day
  • Taking a course to learn a new skill
  • Creating a budget for financial security
  • Meditating for mindfulness
  • Expressing gratitude regularly
  • Eating healthier
  • Exercising more
  • Being more mindful of your environment
  • Deepening relationships with friends

There are specific crystals that are aligned to specific types of intentions, it is therefore recommended you work out what your intention is and then find the matching crystal that has the most useful energy to help you achieve your intention. For example, if you want to be more patient; Dumortierite has the matching energy to support you. If you want to have more fun and adventure; Dalmatian Jasper has the playful energy to attract that. If you want to lose weight; Sardonyx has the driving energy to boost your self-discipline.
